Unit of Inquiry
We officially have one week left for the summative task! The kids have began the planning phase of their structures and will hopefully by Tuesday begin with making their 3d models. The school has recently installed a makers room with powertools for the kids to use. 4RB will be pioneers and be the first class to use the equipment with the support of Mr. Hart, Mr. Clarke and Mr. Macrae.
I look forward to having the kids take their UOI booklets home and show you the process that they went through to make sure that they produce a decent building with an amazing information report to go with it.
Language
The most important part of this project is the information report. The kids will be writing a full report on their designs to explain the architectural values that they included and why they included it. Non-fiction writing on this scale is a real challenge but I have seen some great progress already. The kids have written 3 information reports so far during this unit and I am sure that with the work that is going into the planning phase of the summative task that the final reports will be amazing.
Math
We have looked at a wide variety of skills in math during this unit. Most of our time was spent on mastering the skills of multiplying and dividing big numbers. We also looked at area and perimeter. Two concepts that was beautifully integrated with our unit. We will continue to look at multiplication and division for the rest of the unit with a focus on applying it to solve real life problems.
